Like most of us, you’re probably trying to create a new healthy habit. We are 99.99999% sure that the tip we have for you today will help. The idea is called habit stacking. It will help you create the consistency you need for weight loss and/or fitness success.
What is Habit Stacking?
Habit stacking is exactly what it sounds like. All you do is “stack” whatever habit you’re trying to create on top of an activity you already do every day. For example, we all brush our teeth every morning. So if you’re stacking a habit on top of that, all you need to do is perform the habit you’re trying to create right after you brush. It could be drinking 8 ounces of water, taking your vitamins, etc.
Another example is doing the dishes. Instead of leaving them to pile up, take care of them immediately after eating dinner each night. That way you don’t have to worry about them later.
Stacking Builds Consistency
As you continue to repeat and stack your habits, they will eventually become automatic so that you won’t have to think about them anymore. Our recommendation: Start with one habit at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed or end up with a super-long routine you have to go through before you go to bed. Do you have a new habit you’re trying to create? Here are a couple ideas:
- If you’re trying to get back into your workouts, every night put your gym bag by your door right after you brush your teeth.
- If you’re trying to eat healthier, plan the next day’s meals (including those healthy snacks we’ve been talking about lately!) the night before, just after you eat dinner.
