San Jose Personal Trainer Speaks Out: All Or Nothing Doesn't Work

As a San Jose personal trainer for over 15 years I’ve seen it all when people are pumped to start a fitness or nutrition program. And what I’ve noticed is that many people jump in with an “All or Nothing” approach which in my opinion, just will not work.

  • Maybe it’s running a marathon or even just a 5k. So they try to go out and run the 5K the next day (with little to no training)
  • Maybe it’s a new diet or eating program so they try to give up sugar cold turkey or say that they are “done with carbs.” 🙂

Whatever the case may be, I’m here to offer far better advice.

Practice consistency above all else…because it’s truly the consistency of small changes over time that add up to big results.

It’s the Compound Effect of ALL of your small habit changes and actions. They all add up and create AMAZING results over time.

When you come out the gate at 100 mph, it’s VERY likely that you will end up falling off the wagon within weeks or even days.

So, don’t focus on a marathon… Focus on walking a mile every day until that feels almost too easy.

Don’t cut all carbs on day 1, but stop putting sugar in your morning coffee.

Again, it’s the small, sustainable changes add up over time and are transformational. Just ask my team of other San Jose personal trainers and they will echo the same thing. 🙂

Heck, the pressure alone from the “all or none” mentality breaks most people before they even start.

That’s how years go by and there’s still no change (or things just get worse).

Don’t let that happen to you!

So…What are the few small changes you can commit to today that almost feel too easy? That’s a great place to start. Get after it!

P.S. I’m not saying that you can’t focus on nutrition AND your fitness at the same time. What I AM saying is that you have to be realistic with all of the habits you’re trying to change. Focus on small steps in both areas and then BUILD off of that success.

P.P.S. The missing piece to most of this is support and accountability. Do you have it to achieve your goals?
