Sometimes it seems like you have to eliminate all of the foods you love in order to lose weight. After all, the stuff that tastes good usually has the most calories, right? The short answer is yes, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up everything. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy food favs AND stick to your meal plan.
Make Smart Choices.
Healthy eating means choosing the foods that want to indulge in and being wise about. For example, a typical dinner of pizza, topped of by a glass of beer or wine is heavily loaded on the carbohydrate side (mainly sugars and starches).
Instead: Choose one and combine it with a balanced amount of protein and healthy fats to create a well-rounded meal.
The other thing is… If you’ve ever used a calorie calculator, you’ll notice that certain foods contain more calories/macros than others. The higher the number, the less you can eat within your healthy meal plan.
Pro Tip: Fruit and veggies have significantly fewer calories and/or macros than their starch carb counterparts (i.e. bread, rice, sugar, potatoes). So, your glass of wine is much better received alongside a plate full of broccoli or brussel sprouts than rice or pasta.
That brings us to our next suggestion which is to…
Portion, Portion, Portion!
In addition to food choices, your portion sizes make or break your nutrition plan. Most people eyeball their portions, assuming that what they’re having is “small enough.” But eating right isn’t about eating LESS. It’s about having the RIGHT AMOUNT to keep you satisfied and energized.
Our Recommendation: Weigh and measure your food. How do you know what the right portions are? Use a calorie tracking app like MyFitnessPal. Better yet, check out our free Simple Sample Mealsheet. We’ve portioned a bunch of example meals to make it easier for you.
At the end of the day, what you eat will determine whether or not you make progress on your goals, but you shouldn’t have to suffer in order to lose weight. What foods would you like to make fit into your nutrition plan? Comment below so we can figure out how it fits!
