Everybody seems hungry for quick success with diet and exercise, but here’s the thing: Long-term results should be your goal. The key to that is consistency in your healthy habits – along with a “secret sauce” that often gets overlooked: Gratitude. Studies show that being grateful helps us feel more positive emotions, enjoy good experiences, deal with setbacks, and improve health. Gratitude strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and helps us sleep better. Specifically regarding long-term goals, gratitude keeps us in the right mindset of perspective and self-care. Try this the next time you’re feeling frustrated, like all your work isn’t paying off. Tell Debbie Downer to hush, and then think of a few things for which you are grateful. You could even write them down and see how long the list grows. Look back on progress, blessings, and pleasurable memories. Appreciate where you are now, and how far you’ve come. Polish your goals with excitement for the privilege of pursuing them. When you see just a fraction of your blessings, you’ll find it impossible to feel angry or impatient. Instead, your heart will overflow with – yep! – even more gratitude. And that positive, powerful emotion will fuel you on through the challenging times today and in the future. Life is good – and you’re doing great!
