Our Los Gatos personal fitness trainers want you to know that staying healthy this holiday season means more than managing your fitness and food.
It also means keeping stress from overtaking your head and your heart.
The good news about holiday stress? Everybody feels it! Yep – mental health experts say 89% of us get buggy this time of year.
So, you’re not alone if the thought of shopping, traveling, and dealing (again) with Aunt Minerva’s nosiness are already on your mind. Here’s what our Los Gatos personal fitness trainers have learned about managing stress during the busy holiday season.
- Forget FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). You don’t have to go to every party, meal, and social event. Just choose those that are important or bring you joy.
Manage Your Money. Set a budget for meals, travel, and even gifts. And then do your best to stick to it.
Avoid Overdoing Food and Alcohol. Be responsible at each event with portion control and food choices, favoring natural whole foods over sugary, fat-laden concoctions. If alcohol is served, drink club soda or water in between rounds.
Set Your Own Boundaries. Too much family time can be stressful, so plan breaks or limit visits if you need to. And with friends or coworkers’ invitations, remember that, “No, thank you” is a complete answer.
Let It Go. With the election this season, you might find yourself in awkward social exchanges about touchy subjects. Maintain the peace instead of stoking the tension.
Take Care of Yourself. Keep up your exercise and sleep habits. Take time for yourself. Pray, meditate, or practice whatever relaxation techniques help you stay centered.
Don’t Worry. Honor peace and beauty wherever you find them, and let go of anything that makes your blood pressure spike. If you need to talk to someone about feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a counselor or trusted adviser.
Stress is real, it’s common, and it’s OK to notice when you’re feeling it.
But you don’t have to let it bring you down.
Here’s to a happy and stress-free holiday season!
