A new study out of London suggests that the kind of exercise you enjoy (and stick with) might be written into your personality.

Here’s what they found:

1. Your personality influences your workout style

  • Extraverts liked fast-paced and social workouts like HIIT classes.
  • Agreeable folks preferred slower, more predictable options.
  • Neurotic types (aka worriers) didn’t like intense workouts, but they got the best stress-busting results from their workouts than other types.
  • Open-minded people enjoyed trying new formats.
  • Conscientious types tended to have a higher fitness level and were the most consistent with their workouts, regardless of “fun.”

2. Fitness isn’t just physical

  • People with more anxious or self-critical tendencies experienced the biggest reduction in stress… even when they didn’t enjoy the workouts.

So here is what our Campbell trainers want you to take away from this:

 

Well… it turns out the old “just do it” mindset might be less helpful than we’ve been led to believe for some people.

Instead, you can work with your personality to build consistency and results, without burning out or forcing it.

 

Here’s a quick guide:

  • Extraverted
    Group classes, HIIT, circuit training, high-energy fitness with social vibes.
  • Agreeable
    Walking, low-impact strength training, or steady-paced workouts that feel calm and non-competitive.
  • Neurotic (Worrier)
    Short, structured sessions like 20-minute strength circuits or low-stress cardio.
  • Open to New Experiences
    New formats like TRX, kettlebells, or movement flows that keep things fresh without overwhelming you.
  • Conscientious
    Structured programs with clear progress tracking and built-in recovery days.
