The Kitchen Swap Your Hormones Will Thank You For

This one will make you want to do a sweep of your kitchen cabinets.

If you're still storing food in old plastic containers, drinking from plastic water bottles, or heating leftovers in plastic in the microwave…

It's worth knowing what that habit might be costing you.

Some plastics contain something that’s called “endocrine disruptors”... and as the name suggests, they interfere with your body's hormonal system.

The most talked-about hormone disruptors are BPA and phthalates.

And while they sound like something you'd only hear about in a science lab, they're showing up in things many people use every single day.

These chemicals can mimic estrogen in the body and interfere with the hormonal messages that control everything from your energy and metabolism to your sleep, cravings, and ability to maintain a healthy weight.

It's like trying to have a conversation while someone keeps interrupting you in the middle of it.

Your body is already working hard to keep hormones balanced…

Adding hormone-disrupting chemicals to the mix can make that job a whole lot harder.

The biggest offenders:

Heat. When you microwave food in plastic containers or leave a plastic water bottle in a hot car, the chemicals can leach into your food or drinks at a much higher rate.

Scratched or worn plastic is also more likely to leach than newer containers.

Plastic wrap. When plastic wrap comes in contact with fatty foods, the fat can draw out the chemicals faster.

Sketchy labels. "BPA-free" doesn't always mean safe. Many manufacturers simply replaced BPA with similar chemicals like BPS, which research suggests may be just as problematic.

Here’s what to use instead:

Glass containers are the gold standard. They don't leach anything into your food, they go from freezer to oven, and they last for years. The upfront cost is higher, but they pay for themselves quickly.

Stainless steel water bottles & food containers are another excellent option, especially for on-the-go. They're lightweight, don't retain odors, and give you zero chemical exposure.

Silicone is a good middle ground for things like storage bags, utensils, and baking molds. It's flexible, durable, and doesn't leach harmful chemicals the way plastic does.

If you're not ready to replace everything at once, start with the highest-risk habits first:

Stop microwaving in plastic, ditch the plastic water bottles, and swap your most-used food storage containers for glass. Then, swap out your utensils.

Small swaps, repeated consistently, are how lasting change happens. And this one is actually pretty easy!
